Why Most Business Websites Don't Get Any Leads (And How to Fix It)
Published on 2026-09-20 • Website Strategy • 4 min read
Almost every week, we speak with business owners who spent thousands of dollars on a brand-new website, only to wonder why the phone still isn't ringing.
The site looks pretty. The typography is modern. But weeks go by, and barely anyone fills out the contact form. Usually, the issue isn't your pricing or your reputation—it's that the website makes it too difficult for a normal person to take the next step.
1. The 5-Second Clarity Test
When someone clicks your link from Google or social media, you have about five seconds before they decide whether to stay or hit the "Back" button.
During those five seconds, they need clear answers to three basic questions without scrolling:
- What do you do? State your service in plain English. If you install commercial security cameras, say "Commercial Security & Surveillance Installation," not "Architecting Next-Gen Visual Awareness."
- Where do you do it? If you're a local or regional service, list your city or service area right in the main headline.
- What should I do next? Have one obvious primary button, like "Get a Free Quote" or "Call Today."
2. The 15-Field Form Trap
A huge point of friction on service websites is asking for too much information upfront. When a prospective customer opens a contact form on their phone and sees ten mandatory fields—company address, budget range, timeline, job title, and detailed project notes—it feels like doing their taxes.
Every extra field you add reduces your submission rate. For initial inquiries, keep it dead simple: Name, Phone or Email, and a short box asking "How can we help?". You can collect the finer details once you're on the phone with them.
3. Make the Phone Number Tap-Friendly
More than 65% of local service searches happen on mobile phones. If someone needs an emergency plumber, an auto repair quote, or a commercial contractor, they don't want to fill out a form—they want to tap a button and speak to someone right now.
Make sure your phone number is pinned clearly in your mobile header and configured with a tel: link so one tap connects the call immediately.
